Acer palmatum ‘Inaba-shidare’ is a small, slow growing, deciduous shrub with arching branches of purple filigree leaves, which puts on a spectacular, vivid scarlet show in autumn, making it ideal as a focal point in a small garden.
This gorgeous fine-leaved selection of weeping Japanese Maple makes a wonderful feature or specimen plant. Never taller than a small tree, it is slow growing, and makes a super focal point, forming an upright mound of cascading branches.
With this standard clear-stem form, you get extra height to show off the weeping habit to it’s very best. Covered in lovely red feathery lace foliage from early spring, which darkens to burgundy over summer, and then finally a riot of bright orange red in autumn before it falls.
Grow Inaba-shidare in a large pot, or in a lawn as a feature plant, or in mixed borders – perfect both in modern, minimalist gardens, or more traditional mixed settings. Adds a lovely textural and colourful feel, which will last many, many years.
Supplied as a standard tree, well established and in a 3L pot ready for planting out.
Care Information
- Leaf colour is best in partial shade, although full sun can be tolerated as long as the plant is well watered.
- Avoid exposed places as leaves can suffer with wind-burn (scorch), especially if the plant is dry.
- Allow your Japanese Maple to get used to a whole day in the sun by starting it off in the shade, then standing it in its final sunny spot (in pot or in the garden soil) for one hour longer every day for a week.
- If planting in the garden, prepare a wide hole and loosen the soil with a fork, incorporating organic matter as needed to improve moisture retention and condition. Plant your Acer palmatum so that the top of the root ball is just slightly below ground level.
- Fill the planting hole with soil and heel well in. Water well.
